I chose to to ask the question will birds eat out of more brightly colored bird feeders or darker ones? I thought about this because I want to know what type of colors attract birds. I was having a hard time deciding what birds like better, dark colors or bright ones. I think birds could go to darker colored feeders because of the natural colors and it might seem more like home for birds;but at the same time birds could go to the more brightly colored feeders because of how catching it is to the eye, and how it would grab their attention because of how interesting bright colors would be to them
Question:
Do birds like to eat from more brighter bird feeders or more darker ones?
Research Summary
While I was researching ‘what types of colors attract birds?’ a lot of different answers came up, like orange, blue, red, white, and green. Birds are more attracted to blue and red than any other color. I learned in my research, while I was asking ‘what colors don’t attracted birds?’that birds are very good at seeing and they can see most colors, but they can see some colors better than others. I saw a prezi and it showed that the person making the hypothesis thought the birds would go to the red feeder, and the birds did eventually go to the red feeder, but surprisingly the birds also went to the blue one.
Hypothesis:
I think that birds will go to brightly colored bird feeders instead of the darker colored ones.
Variables:
My independent variable is the birds eating the seeds. My dependent variable is how much seed is eaten by the birds.
Procedure: First I took a milk jug and cut a hole in the middle of one of its sides, then I put two cups of wild bird seed in the milk jug. After that I got a piece of red construction paper and cut out a square. I taped that red square to the top of my milk jug( it doesn't matter where the colored square is, as long as the bird can see it you're good.) Then I stabbed two holes on the top side of my milk jug ,and put the string through the two holes so that you can hang it up.
After I did this process to the rest of the milk jugs, I got a ladder and climed up to a high branch, then I lined up all of the bird feeders together on the tree branch.
Discussion
The process in making the bird feeders was fun, and getting to stab things too. The main thing thing that didn't work was trying to tie the strings on the branches. It was hard work tying them then untying them.
If I could do something differently in my experiment I would take more pictures.
Another hypothesis I could make up would be I think birds will go to darker colored bird feeders because they are a more natural color.
